Why Transparency, Equity and Accountability?

First of all I want to thank you all for joining me on this campaign. While I am the one running for elected office in an effort to fully serve the children of Sonoma Valley Unified School District, I am also very aware that this is not something I do alone and we are all doing this together. I know that we all do this in a collective love for the children in the valley.

I have never run for an elected office before, and like anything new there is a big learning curve and many hoops to jump through to get to the finish line. While I may be new at running for office, something I am not new to is public education. Public Education is something I am deeply committed to both as a mother and as an Educational Advocate. I am often asked why I am so passionate about it and my answer for me is really simple:

Public education is the ONLY place and the ONLY entity in the United States that EVERYONE has the right to access. No matter who you are. It doesn’t matter your ability, language, citizenship status, economic status, disability, race, religion, culture… EVERY SINGLE CHILD has the right to access a free public education and the adults in this country are actually mandated to ensure ALL children access public education. The question we have to keep asking ourselves is, what does that education look like and who is accessing more successfully than others - and why? What barriers are in the way of children learning and how do we remove those barriers so all children are successful, not just some children?

This sounds like a big question, but there are answers and we do not have to reinvent the wheel here. We can look at models that have been successful in other places and duplicate those models and then build on them meeting our community’s specific needs. It does start with a change in our mindset though. While we must be good stewards of our children’s educational dollars with balanced budgets - we must also stop thinking of the kids who need more supports as expenses, and start thinking of them and the programs that support them as investments. We can and must implement Universal Design in Learning. UDL means that we implement curriculum, policy, instruction, scheduling, design classrooms and campuses that meet the needs of the children with the highest needs. When we do this successfully, we by default serve all learners better. What works for children with the most needs works for and uplifts all learners. This is the investment vs expense mindset shift.

Balancing a budget is one piece of the work on a school board, and is part of the bigger scope of work that is serving children and ensuring they are learning, that they are successful, that they are happy and emotionally supported. That their needs as whole human beings are being met so that they can be ready to learn. This means we have work to ensure that their needs before, during and after school are met. That means addressing food insecurity, housing insecurity, mental health, transportation, enrichment programs so they can explore and build on their interests. When we invest in kids and meet their needs as entire humans beings we help kids learn successfully. This also means supporting families, making sure they have access to resources and supports and most importantly building parent and caregiver voices, leadership and creating a welcoming environment for participation. This builds community within our public schools, again Public School is the ONLY place that everyone has the RIGHT to access - so it is the logical place to serve families and build leadership capacity in parents and caregivers.

Why Transparency, Equity and Accountability?
Why am I focusing my campaign on these three things?

When we achieve these three things we serve kids in the best way, and everything we do comes back to these three goals.
For almost a decade now I have been trying to achieve this in our district by sitting in a folding chair at school board meetings and from a seat in the LCAP committee meetings, the SEAC and the Equity and Inclusion Task Force meetings. Some progress was made, but not enough.

When we achieve these three things, we serve children and we serve the community responsibly.

Transparency means that the public can see not only WHAT is being done, but also understand WHY it is happening and the impact that decision will make on children. It also means that the public is provided the opportunity to be a part of that process through public comment and access to their Area Trustees.

Equity means that EVERYONE gets to learn and be successful and make meaningful progress, not just some. It means that EVERYONE gets the opportunity to have a seat and voice at the table, not just those who are affluent and have traditionally held those spaces. It means that we hear from, learn from and take action with those who have struggled the most. Equity doesn’t mean equal… it means that ALL are able access public education and do so successfully. It means those who need support, receive the support as the playing field is rarely level.

Accountability means that we the adults are accountable to the children and their needs at ALL times. Like the board norm says, behave as if the children are watching. This value in Sonoma Valley has been lost and it’s time it not only returns, but it returns as the central focus. That every single decision made, is focused on the children and meeting their needs as learners. Our role as parents, educators, trustees, administrators, community members, grandparents and neighbors is to ensure that all the children are protected, uplifted, cared for and educated with success. Even and especially when the adults are not getting along. That we model the behavior we would like to see. That we use the Restorative Justice practices we expect them to use. That we let everyone sit at our lunch table and not exclude people we don’t agree with. That we do not become so caught up on our disagreements with one another that we forget the children are in the room and they are not okay. We have to stop doing that. We have to pay attention to THEM. The kids are literally telling us they are not okay and that they need us. It’s time we listen and it’s times we act and put them first as our guiding star.

In this campaign, just like in my life - the children are my North Star. They are my guiding light in everything I do. I am asking you to join me in this work and let them guide us and our work together. This means we are going to have some really uncomfortable conversations. We are going to make some really hard decisions. We are going to be courageous in our conversations and be brave enough to sit in our discomfort and do the necessary work on behalf of the kids who really need us to do this work.

Lately I have been asked by supporters what you can do to help me. I will definitely need your help, I have learned this election process is not an easy one, especially for regular people who have never done it before. Right now some of the technical aspects of a campaign are being put together and so more will come soon. However, the most immediate thing you can do is endorse me. You can message this Facebook page and let me know you would like to be listed on the endorsement page of my website or you can leave it in the comments and I will add your name. If you feel like you want to tell me why you are endorsing me as a candidate, even better. It is important to me that my endorsements are from my community, my neighbors, the people I see every day. In my view, the most important endorsements from the very people who are entrusting me to do the work of the children they love. Your endorsements matter the most to me because I value your trust deeply.

No importa quién seas. No importa tu capacidad, tu idioma, tu condición de ciudadano, tu situación económica, tu discapacidad, tu raza, tu religión, tu cultura...

Vamos a tomar algunas decisiones realmente difíciles.
