His First Election

Today my oldest son voted for the very first time before going to work. It’s his first election since he turned 18 and I was able to have this really special moment with him this morning that my mom had with me when I filled out a ballot for the first time.
Just like my mom did with me, he and I sat down together and I showed him how to do his research on each candidate and ballot measure. How to understand what each ballot measure means and what each candidate prioritizes, stands for and to understand what each candidate has done prior to this election where they are asking him for their vote.
Today my son voted as a well informed voter. He made his decisions, he cast his ballot.
When he arrived at the portion of the ballot for school board and saw my name, he had a big smile. His first election ever and his mom’s name is on his ballot and he was really proud of that which made me feel pretty emotional.
When I see my son having this moment, I then reflected on when he was little and his brothers and I walked down to La Luz so their dad and I could vote in the 2012 Election. They were so excited to get their “I voted” stickers and I remember Nasir saying to me then that he could not wait until he was “old enough to color the bubbles and vote” too.
That day has arrived.
He filled in his bubbles.
He made his decisions.
His mom’s name is on his ballot.
Now he is off to work at a job he loves at Boys and Girls Club nurturing and caring for the next little generation who depend on him now to make decisions that improve their lives and make their world better.
Our kids grow so fast everyone, so when you cast your vote include them in your decisions. Vote for their benefit. They depend on us to do this work.
Hoy mi hijo mayor ha votado por primera vez antes de ir a trabajar. Es la primera vez que vota desde que cumplió los 18 años y esta mañana he podido tener con él un momento tan especial como el que tuvo mi madre conmigo cuando rellené la papeleta por primera vez.
Al igual que mi madre hizo conmigo, él y yo nos sentamos juntos y le enseñé a investigar sobre cada candidato y medida de la papeleta. Cómo entender lo que significa cada medida de la papeleta y lo que cada candidato prioriza, defiende y para entender lo que cada candidato ha hecho antes de esta elección en la que le están pidiendo su voto.
Hoy mi hijo ha votado como un votante bien informado. Ha tomado sus decisiones y ha emitido su voto.
Cuando llegó a la parte de la boleta para la junta escolar y vio mi nombre, tuvo una gran sonrisa. Es la primera vez que vota y el nombre de su madre está en su papeleta y estaba muy orgulloso de ello, lo que me hizo emocionarme.
Al ver a mi hijo teniendo este momento, entonces reflexioné sobre cuando él era pequeño y sus hermanos y yo caminamos hasta La Luz para que su papá y yo pudiéramos votar en las Elecciones de 2012. Estaban muy emocionados por conseguir sus pegatinas de "he votado" y recuerdo que Nasir me dijo entonces que no podía esperar a ser "lo suficientemente mayor para colorear las burbujas y votar" también.
Ese día ha llegado.
Rellenó sus burbujas.
Ha tomado sus decisiones.
El nombre de su madre está en su papeleta.
Ahora se va a trabajar en un empleo que le encanta en el Club de Niños y Niñas nutriendo y cuidando a la próxima pequeña generación que depende de él ahora para tomar decisiones que mejoren sus vidas y hagan su mundo mejor.
Nuestros niños crecen muy rápido, así que cuando emitas tu voto inclúyelos en tus decisiones. Votad en su beneficio. Ellos dependen de nosotros para hacer este trabajo.
