In Honor of George - En honor a George

Today when I went to the voting center to cast my ballot, I reflected on the times in the past when I would go to my neighborhood voting center and my neighbor George was always there to greet me as a volunteer, checking me in and giving my kids “I Voted” stickers. Many of you likely also had George help you each election in The Springs.
For over a decade George was my next door neighbor before he passed a couple of years ago. My kids used to love to pick fruit from his backyard trees with him, and would often ask me “Can we go over to George’s and play?” He was an incredible person and I am so grateful my kids were able to grow up with him in their young lives.
George worked hard for democracy. He was fully committed to it and served our community faithfully in an effort to ensure everyone had access to their right to vote.
One of my favorite memories with him was walking with him at the Women’s March with my daughter Mia. He marched so hard we lost him and had to catch up with him at the end. He out-marched us both! For us, George was more than a neighbor - he was family, he was a hero, he was one of the smartest and kindest people I have ever known. I learned a lot from him.
In honor of George, I want to take a moment and thank all the election volunteers who have given their time and labor to ensure that we all are able to exercise our right to vote. May we all live our lives committed to others in our community the way he did. I hope that in my lifetime I am able to make even half the impact in the world that George made. I know I will spend my life trying to reach that bar he set too high for us all.
Hoy, cuando fui al centro de votación para emitir mi voto, reflexioné sobre los tiempos pasados en los que iba al centro de votación de mi barrio y mi vecino George siempre estaba allí para recibirme como voluntario, registrándome y dándoles a mis hijos pegatinas de "He votado". Es probable que muchos de ustedes también hayan contado con la ayuda de George en cada elección en The Springs.
Durante más de una década George fue mi vecino de al lado antes de que falleciera hace un par de años. A mis hijos les encantaba recoger fruta de los árboles de su patio trasero con él, y a menudo me preguntaban "¿Podemos ir a casa de George a jugar?". Era una persona increíble y estoy muy agradecida de que mis hijos hayan podido crecer con él en sus jóvenes vidas.
George trabajó mucho por la democracia. Estaba totalmente comprometido con ella y sirvió fielmente a nuestra comunidad en un esfuerzo por garantizar que todos tuvieran acceso a su derecho al voto.
Uno de mis recuerdos favoritos con él fue caminar con él en la Marcha de las Mujeres con mi hija Mia. Marchó con tanta fuerza que lo perdimos y tuvimos que alcanzarlo al final. Nos superó en la marcha a las dos. Para nosotros, George era más que un vecino: era de la familia, era un héroe, era una de las personas más inteligentes y amables que he conocido. Aprendí mucho de él.
En honor a George, quiero dedicar un momento a dar las gracias a todos los voluntarios electorales que han dedicado su tiempo y su trabajo a garantizar que todos podamos ejercer nuestro derecho al voto. Que todos vivamos nuestra vida comprometidos con los demás en nuestra comunidad como lo hizo él. Espero que a lo largo de mi vida sea capaz de causar la mitad del impacto que tuvo George en el mundo. Sé que me pasaré la vida intentando alcanzar el listón que él puso muy alto para todos nosotros.
